Tasmanian Govt Rlys RSH Pacific M2 at Marley Hill

Description

Most of the locomotives at the Tanfield Railway worked for British industries, but this Pacific (4-6-2) is a rare exception as it worked on a main-line railway.  Tasmanian Government Railways M10 was built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns in Darlington and shipped to Australia in 1952.  It worked on the TGR lines until 1972, when it was retired as M2, and was shipped back to England in 1992 while her nine sisters remained in Australia for preservation and restoration.  The Tanfield Railway has designated her a "long term restoration" project and parked her at the Marley Hill railyard among other rolling stock, though how Tanfield would use a 3'6''-gauge (1067mm) Pacific on a standard-gauge line worked by tank engines is not clear to me at the moment unless it is only to be displayed.  Though M2 looks to be in poor shape, other locomotives have been restored to their original appearance from far worse conditions, such as King Edward II, and there is enough to work with for a cosmetic restoration.  Personally I would like to see her displayed at the National Railway Museum, Newcastle Discovery Museum, or Darlington Head of Steam Railway Museum so Tanfield can focus on British industrial railway history.
