Description

Unlike most of the locomotives parked at the Tanfield Railway's Marley Hill railyard, this Pacific (4-6-2) steam locomotive never worked on an industrial railway in northeastern England.  Tasmanian Government Railways M2's connection is that she was built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1951 (originally numbered M10) as the last new steam locomotive built for the 1067mm-gauge TGR, which had already "dieselised" some lines.  She reached Australia in 1952 and worked until 1961, when she was moved from Devonport to Launceston and used as a spare parts source, giving her boiler to sister MA2 and her tender bogies to a tunnel-boring machine.  She was then towed to Stanley in 1972 and plinthed in a park, where she was cosmetically restored but not maintained.  M2 was then shipped from Australia to England in 1992 after her purchase by Eric Maxwell and has been under "long-term restoration" ever since.  Her original boiler is still on MA2, which is being restored by the Don River Railway back in Tasmania.  What should happen to M2?  Even if she could be restored to cosmetic -- let alone operating -- condition like formerly-derelict GWR King Edward II, there are no 1067mm-gauge heritage railways I know in the UK, and if she were to be kept at the Tanfield Railway, she would need to be displayed indoors to protect her from the elements, a point reinforced by the damp weather that afternoon.  Personally, I think she could be displayed at the National Railway Museum in York, the Locomotion Museum in Shildon (which has a British-built 1067mm-gauge South African 4-8-0 locomotive), the Discovery Museum in downtown Newcastle (next to the steamship Turbinia), or the entrance to the Newcastle central railway station.
