Description

The first Western Pacific Railroad operated from 1862 to 1870 between Sacramento and San Jose.  Its seventh locomotive was a 4-4-0 built by Norris-Lancaster in 1864 and named Mariposa ("butterfly" in Spanish).  When the early Western Pacific ran out of money, the Central Pacific took over, and Mariposa became CP No. 31.  It held this identity until 1914, when the locomotive was sold to the Stockton Terminal & Eastern Railroad.  It became ST&E No. 1, and was donated to the Travel Town Museum with this identity in 1953.  Mariposa/31/1 is the oldest locomotive on display at Travel Town, and one of the five oldest locomotives in California.
