Description

The Metroliner was a two-car electric train built by Budd in the late 1960s for express passenger services on the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) Northeast Corridor line from Washington DC to New York City. The Metroliner was fast, once exceeding 150 miles per hour on the test track. But the technology was too new to be reliable, and the odd-looking electric trains were never very popular. Amtrak found itself needing diesels to pull the electric cars, and was glad to be able to replace them with more reliable AEM7 locomotives pulling Amfleet cars. As the Metroliners and Amfleet cars look so similar, they have gained a new lease on life as control cars for Amtrak push-pull electric trains. One of the original Metroliner cars, snack bar No. 860, is preserved in Strasburg with its original interior.
