Description

In 1935, London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) chief mechanical engineer Sir William Stanier ordered Crewe Works to rebuild experimental high-pressure steam locomotive No. 6399 Fury (North British Locomotive Company, 1929) as a more conventional Royal Scot-class 4-6-0 express passenger engine.  The locomotive came back out of the works as No. 6170 British Legion, which was named for the military support charity that distributes red poppies around Remembrance Day.  British Legion was scrapped by British Railways after her 1962 retirement, but her badge-shaped nameplate was preserved and is now displayed at the National Railway Museum in York.
