Description

The most common British diesel locomotive is Class 08, a large class of 0-C-0 (0-6-0) shunters of an LMS design that helped bring an end to British steam. The class was built from 1953 to 1962, and included the following variations:
- Class 08
- Class 09
- Class 10
- Class 11
- Class 13
These classes in total consisted of 1193 locomotives. Class 08 locomotives were also exported to the Netherlands (NS Class 500/600), Australia (Victorian Railways Class F), and Liberia. Currently, sixty Class 08 locomotives are preserved in Britain, including this black one, No. D3079/08064/13079, undergoing restoration in the National Railway Museum. Class 08 locomotives were nicknamed "Gronk" for the low growling sound of their engines.

The Class 08 became infamous in the Railway Series by the Rev. W. Awdry, in which Devious Diesel plotted against Thomas the Tank engine and his steam friends.
