Description

The archway at the entrance to the Beamish Museum (full name "Beamish North of England Open Air Museum") is a large steam hammer built by Glen and Ross of Glasgow in 1883 for the Darlington Forge.  It was later moved to the Steel, Peech and Tozer mill in Rotherham, Yorkshire, where it was nicknamed Tiny Tim.  After the United Steel Companies (Steel-Peech-Tozer, Samuel Fox, and Appleby-Frodingham) were nationalized, the British Steel Corporation eventually decommissioned Tiny Tim and donated the massive hammer to the Beamish Museum.  The Steel, Peech and Tozer mill closed in 1993, but part of the factory has been reopened as the Magna science museum.
