Description
In 1875, the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, a Nevada short line, received a 2-4-0 steam locomotive from Baldwin. This engine, No. 21, was named J.W. Bowker for the railway's master mechanic. It had a steam water pump atop the boiler for fire-fighting purposes, and was given shunting duties in Virginia City. After Bowker was dismissed from the V&T, No. 21 was temporarily renamed Mexico, but its original name was restored. It appeared in the 1939 Cecil B. DeMille epic film Union Pacific, and today sits at the Central Pacific station in Sacramento, preserved by the California State Railroad Museum. It is the only Baldwin 2-4-0 in the world today.
