Union of South Africa at the Great Gathering

Description

Built by Doncaster in 1937 as LNER 4488, Union of South Africa is one of six surviving Gresley A4-class express Pacifics. It became BR 60009 upon nationalization, and wears this number with the lined Brunswick green livery in preservation, along with the shedcode for Edinburgh Haymarket depot. It was briefly renamed Osprey in the 1980s and 1990s to protest apartheid in South Africa, but its usual name was restored after the election of Nelson Mandela. Union of South Africa is a hard-working engine, and has run over a million miles after its retirement. It joined its five surviving brothers at the Great Gathering (NRM York) to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard's speed record. Soon it will return to pulling passenger trains in excursion service.

Nice shot of the engine and glad to hear it's still being a hard worker.
