Description

Since the Navy won this weekend's annual Army-Navy football game, here is a picture of a U.S. Navy ship.  USS Los Angeles (CA-135) was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser built by the Philadelphia Navy Yard.  It was commissioned in July 1945, missing the end of World War II.  During the Korean War, it patrolled the Sea of Japan and supported American landings in Korea by shelling North Korean positions, for which it was awarded five battlestars.  In 1956, it protected the Quemoy and Matsu Islands in the Straits of Taiwan from the threat of invasion by mainland China.  USS Los Angeles was decommissioned in 1963 and scrapped, but some of its components are on display next to a model at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, California, near the port of Long Beach the ship once called home.

Fun fact: USS Los Angeles also appeared in the French-language Belgian comic The Adventures of Tintin, where it rescued the hero from slave traders.
