Description

Merry Christmas to us all; God blast us, every one!

Named for the crippled little boy in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Tiny Tim was (ironically enough) the largest and strongest air-to-ground rocket used in World War II.  It was developed by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake to attack well-defended targets such as bunkers or enemy ships. Tiny Tim measured ten feet long by one foot wide, carried a 150-pound TNT warhead, and had a range of about one mile.  It was used by several different airplanes near the end of World War II in battles such as the invasion of Okinawa, and was also used against the Communists in the Korean War.  It was replaced in the 1950s, and one Tiny Tim rocket was put on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
