Description
The White Tower is the central tower and old keep of the castle that is the Tower of London. It was commissioned by King William the Conqueror, and construction began around 1078 under the supervision of Gundulf the bishop (not Gandalf the wizard). The White Tower was finished by 1100 and became the largest symbol of Norman royal power in London. Over the centuries, it has become infamous for its prison, though it also contains an armory and a chapel.
