Description
"I cannot believe that killing 2,500 Englishmen at New Orleans qualifies for the various difficult and complicated duties of the Chief Magistracy."
- Henry Clay, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
First running for President in 1824 before being elected in 1828 and reelected in 1832, Andrew Jackson was America's sixth president and first populist president. He promised to disrupt the political establishment and empower the common man, but ended up using government power to exact revenge against those whom he felt had wronged him, such as bankers and Native Americans. During his presidential campaigns, supporters produced propaganda posters, such as this one at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which billed him as "The Hero of New Orleans" and depicted General Jackson leading the U.S. Army in the charge that defeated the British in the final battle of the War of 1812.
