Description

On October 21 (originally September 15), 1600, the armies of rival warlords Toyotomi Hideyori and Tokugawa Ieyasu met at the Battle of Sekigahara in Mino Province (now part of Gifu Prefecture).  The Tokugawa army numbered 75,000 soldiers, mostly from eastern Japan, and the Toyotomi army numbered 120,000 soldiers, mostly from western Japan.  During the battle, 23,000 soldiers defected from the western army to the eastern army, and as many as 32,000 western soldiers were killed, while several Toyotomi commanders were executed.  The eastern army won the Battle of Sekigahara with few casualties, and Tokugawa Ieyasu unified Japan under the Bakufu (Shogunate) that governed Japan in the name of the Emperor until the 1868 Meiji Restoration.  A scene from the Battle of Sekigahara was modelled in this diorama by Takuji Yamada, which is on display at the Hamamatsu Diorama Factory.

Wow, very cool! Thanks for writing up the history. Was Tokugawa Ieyasu a peasant who became a Samurai? Er, or maybe I'm getting confused with someone else.
