Description

By the beginning of the Taisho Period, the Ministry of Railways had to design bogie electric railcars to relieve overcrowded four-wheel commuter cars in the Tokyo area.  The oldest survivor is Nade-6141, which was built by the Ministry's own Shimbashi workshop in 1914 and first run on the Chuo Line.  It could carry 92 passengers, which it could load and unload faster with three doors on each side, and still used trolley poles instead of pantographs to collect the current.  Nade-6141 also ran on the Yamanote Line before it was sold to private commuter railways such as the Meguro Kamata Electric Railway, Tsurumi Rinkou Railway, and Hitachi Electric Railway.  The railcar was sold back to Japanese National Railways in 1972, restored by JNR's Oi workshop in Shinagawa, and declared a railway history monument.  It is displayed at the Railway Museum (Omiya, Saitama) as a Chuo Line third-class car.
