Description
The TEP60 was the first Soviet passenger diesel to be an original design instead of a modification of a freight class. This class of 1241 diesels was built by Kolomna Diesel Locomotive Works starting in 1960 (hence the name TEP60). On the Moscow-Petersburg line, the prototypes impressed the civil engineers with their 3000 horsepower and top speed of 100 miles per hour, very fast for a diesel back then. The TEP60 engines were built until the mid-1980s, but some are still in use, most of them still wearing the red and gold livery. Outside Russia, one of the largest TEP60 fleets is in Belarus, where the engines wear not red and gold, but the Belarusian colors of red, white, and green. TEP60-1200 was retired from regular service, and is preserved in the Moscow Railway Museum.
