Description

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS) experimental 1-C-C-1 electric locomotive No. 14201 was the only member of Class Ce 6/8i.  It was built by Brown-Boveri and SLM Winterthur in 1919 as Switzerland began electrifying its railways to reduce the dependence on coal that had caused fuel shortages in World War I.  No. 14201, nicknamed the Kofferlilok for the trunk-shaped cabinets on each nose, could produce up to 2350 horsepower.  It was tested on the Bern-Spiez, Kanderstag-Frutigen, and Gotthard lines, though it actually began service one week after the more famus Ce 6/8ii Crocodile did.  No. 14201 was retired in 1982 after running 2.5 million kilometers, about three trips to the moon and back with a little extra distance or 63 circumnavigations of the Earth.  While I have yet to see the original locomotive at the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (Swiss Transport Museum) in Lucerne, I have seen an HO-scale model of No. 14201 at the Hara Model Railway Museum in Yokohama, Japan.

The engineers also called it "Grossmueter" (Grandmother).
