Description

Although Amtrak was established in 1971, President W. Graham Claytor continued to run passenger trains on the Southern Railway until 1979.  He also kept the old streamlined diesels in their green-and-white livery, which several survivors still wear.  A good example is EMD E8A 6900, which was assigned to the Washington DC-Atlanta, Georgia "Southern Crescent" express.  It is preserved at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer.

PS: I have found that the Crescent ran all the way to New Orleans, stopping in Atlanta on the way, so either the NCTM website listed the wrong destinations for the train or meant that 6900 was assigned to a particular section.

Louisville & Nashville also ran a train known as the "Crescent" that went to New Orleans, possible confusion between the "Southern Crescent" and L&N's Crescent?

Great shot!!
