Sacramento Purple Heart Memorial by rlkitterman Sacramento Purple Heart Memorial by rlkitterman
This memorial to the recipients of the Purple Heart, successor to President George Washington's Badge of Military Merit as the oldest military decoration in America, stands on the grounds of the California state capitol in Sacramento.  Unlike most war memorials, it is red, representing the wounds Americans have suffered in combat, as the Purple Heart is awarded to American military personnel (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard) wounded or killed by enemy action or by action against enemies of America, and non-military personnel such as civilian government employees are no longer eligible.  Similar memorials are on display all over America thanks to the effort of the Wounded Combat Veterans, who have raised awareness of the struggles "wounded warriors" face even if they survive.
