Description

In 1678, the Kingdom of Scotland created three troops of Scots Dragoons, which were combined into The Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons. Because they rode grey horses, they were nicknamed the Royal Scots Greys, a name that stuck with them throughout their service to both the Scottish and British crowns. They served in many conflicts, including:
- The War of the Spanish Succession
- The Jacobite Rising
- The War of Austrian Succession
- The Seven Years War
- The Napoleonic Wars
- The Crimean War
- The Boer War
- The First World War
- The Arab Revolt
- The Second World War (began to use tanks, and were last cavalry regiment to still use horses)
- The Aden Emergency
After nearly 300 years of existence, the Royal Scots Greys were combined with the Third Carabiniers to form The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. This statue in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh commemorates their service in the Boer War.
