Description
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the most common American fighter in World War II, and came in several versions. The P-47D was built from 1943 to 1944, and was replaced by the long-range P-47N. A surviving P-47D is "Five by Five" of the 362nd Fighter Group, now on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio).
