Pennsylvania Mikado 520

Description

Finding the Consolidation (2-8-0) locomotives increasingly inadequate, the Pennsylvania Railroad developed the L1 Mikado (2-8-2) as the freight equivalent of its passenger-pulling K4 Pacific (4-6-2).  From 1914 to 1919, Juniata, Baldwin, and Lima built 574 L1 Mikados, which were the basis for the USRA Heavy Mikado.  The L1 Mikado had a tractive effort exceeding 61,000 pounds, making it very useful overall, though the M1 Mountain and I1 Decapod took over some of the heavy trains.

Inspired by the PRR, Nigel Gresley of the LNER designed the A1 Pacific and P1 Mikado as complementary classes, though the British preference for short trains meant that the Mikado's success did not translate so well compared to the Pacific's.  The only surviving PRR Mikado, No. 520, sits outside the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg.  It has been stripped down a bit over the years and taken a beating from the weather, but still looks strong enough to pull a 100-car train.
