Description

At the height of its powers, the Pacific Electric Railway had a massive fleet, which included business cars for its officers.  No. 1299 was built by Pullman in 1912 and was very luxurious by any standard.  The carpeted parlor had large leather armchairs.  The kitchen was small but well-equipped, and a toilet compartment was provided for passengers.  No. 1299 ran from downtown Los Angeles to Balboa/Newport Beach, where railway management kept their summer homes.  It was retired from active service in 1948, but ran in excursion service for another ten years, and was displayed at the Pomona Fairplex (until recently home to a Big Boy) from 1958 to 1998.  The car was acquired by the Orange Empire Railway Museum with the help of a Mr. Walter Abbenseth, and has been under restoration for the last fifteen years.  It can be run as a trailer car, but is not yet operable as a driving motor car.
