Nippon Sharyo C12.164 at Shin-Kanaya by rlkitterman Nippon Sharyo C12.164 at Shin-Kanaya by rlkitterman
Oigawa Railway ex-Japanese National Railways (JNR) 2-6-2 tank engine C12.164 was built 80 years ago in 1937 (Showa Year 12) by Nippon Sharyo, whose factory made 110 of the 282 C12 locomotives.  When I saw it parked at the Shin-Kanaya railyard on a cool, windy autumn day, it had not yet been taken into the workshop to be restored to operating condition, but it appeared to be in good shape and rolled freely enough that restoration should not be too much work compared to other steam locomotives.

Thanks!  I didn't know much about Japanese engines before I moved to Japan, and now that I'm back home I wish they were better known.

I'll be following the news on the Oigawa Railway's Facebook page -- the workshop just finished repainting C10.8 in the "zebra" livery it wore as a shunter at Rasa Industries' Miyako Porcelain Works, so C12.164 should be the next steam engine in the shed.
