Navajo Flag

The flags of several Native American nations are displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, including the flag of the Navajo Nation, which was adopted in 1968.  The flag is based on traditional sand painting, and shows a rainbow shining over the Navajo seal, a map of the tribal reservation in the Southwest, four mountains, and the Navajo national emblem.  In 1995, NASA astronaut Bernard Harris took it aboard the space shuttle Discovery, making the Navajo the first Native American nation to have its flag in outer space.
