Nagoya Castle

Description

The first Nagoya Castle was built in the 1520s by the Imagawa clan, though it was seized by the Oda clan in the 1530s and became the possible birthplace of Oda Nobunaga.  In 1609, Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered the reconstruction of Nagoya Castle, and made it the residence of his main line of descendants, the Owari branch.  It was decorated with golden fish (referred to as carp, dolphin, grampus, or orc) ornaments, which have become symbols of Nagoya.  The castle was taken over by the imperial government in 1893, and was given to the city of Nagoya in 1930.  During World War II, it was used as headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) Tokai District and POW camp administration, leading to its bombing by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) in May 1945.  In 1959, the rebuilt castle was opened to the public, though work on the Honmaru Palace will continue throughout the 2010s.  As seen here, the five-story castle keep has been rebuilt with some modern conveniences such as an elevator, and the castle grounds now contain cafes and gift shops.
