NWR J-600 Under Construction by rlkitterman NWR J-600 Under Construction by rlkitterman
In 1941, Norfolk and Western Railway streamlined 4-8-4 J-600 was under construction and nearing completion at the N&W locomotive works in Roanoke, Virginia.  Unlike its surviving classmate J-611, J-600 was built with a lower-pressure 275-psi boiler and lightweight duplex side rods.  It took the J-600 identity from a previous locomotive, a Baldwin-built Atlantic (4-4-2) in service from 1903 to 1935.  Thanks to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, this picture is on display next to the N&W main line through downtown Roanoke.
