NASA Langley NF-106B Lightning Strike Plane by rlkitterman NASA Langley NF-106B Lightning Strike Plane by rlkitterman
In 1980, the NASA Langley Research Center acquired a Convair F-106 Delta Dart supersonic jet fighter from the U.S. Air Force and modified it into the NF-106B two-seater test plane.  The NF-106B was nicknamed the "Lightning Strike Plane" for the many times it was flown into storm clouds to test resistance to lightning strikes.  After being struck by lightning 714 times without taking any damage, the NF-106B was retired and hung from the ceiling of the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton.
