Description

In the 1930s, Japanese Government Railways (JGR) bought its first streamlined electric locomotives, the three EF55 express passenger engines, for the 1067mm-gauge Tokaido Main Line.  They had a 2-C-C-1 configuration (equivalent to a 4-6-6-2 steam locomotive) and were nicknamed "Moomin" after the Finnish cartoon troll for their large noses, which were only mounted on the front end.  This style resembled the Paris-Orleans Railway's twenty Class E.700 (SNCF Class 2D2.5100) locomotives of the same era. Japanese National Railways (JNR) retired the EF55s in 1958, stripped two for parts, and kept EF55.1 (Hitachi, 1936) as a trainer at Nishi-Kokubunji's Chuo Railway Institute.  The locomotive pulled excursion trains from 1986 to 2008, and was stored by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) at Takasaki until it was exhibited on the turntable of the Railway Museum (鉄道博物館) in Omiya, Saitama.  A guide took her place on the turntable and recited the locomotive's history as a driver in Showa Period uniform climbed into the cab, raised the pantographs, switched on the lights, and blew the horn.
