Description

The Martin B-57 Canberra was the U.S. Air Force version of the English Electric Canberra.  In 1956, the Canberra was modified to create the RB-57, which could perform recon missions at nearly 70,000 feet up.  In December of that year, three RB-57D Canberras flew over Vladivostok, Russia in broad daylight, after which recon flights were transferred to the CIA.  The RB-57 lasted shorter than the U-2 did as a spy plane due to wing failures, though it remained in service until 1970.  An RB-57D is on display in the Cold War gallery of the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio).
