Martin MB-2 Bomber

Description

Introduced in 1920, the Martin NBS-1/MB-2 was the first mass-production American bomber, replacing the British and Italian imports used by the U.S. Army in World War I.  It had five machine guns, a 3000-pound bomb load, and folding wings.  Its two Liberty engines gave it a range of 558 miles, an improvement over WWI bombers.
In 1921, the MB-2 became one of the most important bombers in history when Brigadier-General Billy Mitchell used it to sink captured German battleships off the coast of Virginia, proving that air power would threaten traditional naval power in future wars.  As no original Martin MB-2 bombers remain, this replica was built in 2002 and is now on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio).
