Lehigh and New England Coal Hopper 14518

Description

It is often the case that two railroads can have similar names or abbreviations.  For example, LNER stood for London and North Eastern Railway, which operated in Britain from 1923 to 1948 and was famous for its streamlined steam trains.  Meanwhile, LNE stood for Lehigh and New England Railroad, a 220-mile railroad in the northeastern United States that connected other railroads and carried anthracite coal.  Due to the decline of the anthracite coal industry and the railroad's poor connections with the rest of the country, the LNE closed in 1961 and dismantled most of its track.  One of its surviving railcars is coal hopper No. 14518, which was built by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1936 to carry 50 tons of coal.  It was donated to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company in 1969, and was restored to its original LNE appearance, though I doubt it ever looked this clean for very long.

The Illinois Railway Museum has the last surviving Lehigh & New England steam locomotive. I can't remember the number, but it's a 0-6-0.
