Description

The Type 60 Biwako (Lake Biwa) articulated electric railcar entered service on the Keihan Electric Railway in 1934.  Around this time, Keihan was looking to promote itself as a true Kyoto-Osaka interurban railway rather than just a commuter line, and decided to capitalize on the international streamlining movement.  The railcars were based on Brill streamliners used by the Washington, Baltimore, and Annapolis Railway in the American state of Maryland, and were built by Nippon Sharyo and Kawasaki.  The Biwako cars remained in service until 1970, and at least one set has been preserved.  This model of a Biwako streamliner is on display at the Hara Model Railway Museum in Yokohama.
