IJN Yamato-Class Battleships at Yodobashi-Akiba

Description

These models of Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Yamato-class battleships, the largest battleships ever commissioned, were for sale at the Yodobashi-Akiba Megastore.  Two of them show HIJMS Yamato as it appeared when commissioned in 1941 and when sunk on its 1945 suicide mission.  The aircraft carrier is HIJMS Shinano, which was rebuilt from a battleship to an aircraft carrier to replace the loss of four fleet carriers at the Battle of Midway, and was the world's largest aircraft carrier until it was sunk in 1944, shortly before it was slated to be equipped with airplanes.  The fourth ship, No. 798, is probably one of the two battleships planned but never built, while HIJMS Musashi is not shown here.  Japan planned to build an even larger battleship, Design A-150, which would have carried six 20-inch guns even larger than the Yamato sisters' 18.1-inch guns, but the A-150 never did more than exist on paper and in a few naval architects' heads.
