IJN Battleship Kongo

Description

Imperial Japanese Navy battleship Kongo (adamant/indestructible) was built by Vickers of Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire/Cumbria, England.  It was commissioned in 1913 as a battlecruiser and patrolled the Chinese coast during World War I.  Kongo was rebuilt as a battleship in 1929 and a fast battleship in 1935, making it a major participant in World War II.  It attacked British and Dutch defenses in Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively, during the Japanese invasions, and then spent the latter half of the war bouncing around the Pacific, trying to beat back the American "island-hopping" campaign and aircraft carrier fleets.

In 1944, Kongo was further modified.  Its anti-aircraft weapons were upgraded, which may have helped it survive the general destruction inflicted on the IJN during the Battle of the Philippine Sea.  However, Kongo was lost in the Battle of Leyte Gulf when USS Sealion (SS-315) hit it with two torpedoes.  Kongo took on water for two and a half hours before a magazine explosion destroyed the ship and killed 1200 sailors, including the captain and the admiral.  Kongo was the last battleship to be sunk by a submarine.  A model is on display at Shizuoka Hobby Square.

I like it! Is that one of the Myokō class heavy cruisers I see next to it?
