IJN Aircraft Carrier Katsuragi

Description

The last Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Unryu-class aircraft carrier to be commissioned was Katsuragi, which entered service in the fall of 1944 but was never actually used as an aircraft carrier due to the IJN's increasing lack of airplanes and pilots.  It was docked at the Kure naval base as a floating anti-aircraft platform, and was damaged but not sunk during the July 1945 American bombing of Kure.  Katsuragi was later scrapped as part of the post-World War II disarmament of Japan by the Allied occupation.  It lent its name to NERV colonel Misato Katsuragi in Hideaki Anno's anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.  This model of Katsuragi as it was meant to look, with squadrons of fighters and bombers preparing to take off from the flight deck, is on display aboard the museum battleship HIJMS Mikasa in Yokosuka.
