Hokkaido Mogul 7105 Yoshitsune

Description

In 1880, the Horonai Railway of Hokkaido ordered eight Mogul (2-6-0) steam locomotives from H.K. Porter (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA).  No. 7105 was named Yoshitsune after Yoshitsune Minamoto, a 12th-century samurai general.  Its name is written in romaji on the cab and kanji on the tender.  It was preserved at the Modern Transportation Museum in Osaka, but was transferred to the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum in Kyoto after the MTM closed and moved to Kyoto.  Two other Hokkaido Moguls, No. 7101 Benkei and No. 7106 Shizuka, are also preserved.  They are the only remaining Japanese locomotives I know of that were officially named.  I wish the policy of naming locomotives had continued beyond the Meiji era.
