HIJMS Maya by rlkitterman HIJMS Maya by rlkitterman
HIJMS Maya (摩耶), the third Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Takao-class heavy cruiser, was named for the 700-meter Mount Maya near Kobe, the same city where she was built by the Kawasaki shipyard.  She also reused the name of an old Akagi-class gunboat that fought in the First Sino-Japanese War.  She was commissioned in 1932 and led the Imperial Japanese Army's Sixth Division to China in the Second Sino-Japanese War before being rebuilt by the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal to improve her stability.  HIJMS Maya fought all over the Pacific in World War II, sinking many Allied ships.  Her crew of a thousand included a monkey the seaplane crew picked up at Kure and taught to salute the officers, who did not appreciate the prank.

I hope the monkey was able to survive the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in which HIJMS Maya was sunk by the American submarine USS Dace (SS-247), whose captain thought he was torpedoing a battleship.  The Americans did get three battleships at Leyte Gulf: the old dreadnoughts HIJMS Fuso and HIJMS Yamashiro and the new Yamato-class battleship HIJMS Musashi, which was sunk shortly after picking up survivors from HIJMS Maya.  Therefore, almost half the crew of HIJMS Maya perished, including the captain.  This model aboard the museum battleship HIJMS Mikasa in Yokosuka shows how HIJMS Maya, with her imposing superstructure and impressive armament, could have been mistaken for a battleship at a distance.

HIJMS Maya's name was used in Hideaki Anno's anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion for Maya Ibuki, who was named for two Japanese ships, though the reference is not as readily apparent in her case as Maya is a woman's name in several cultures around the world.  Just today, Israeli-born Hollywood actress Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) named her newborn daughter Maya.  おめでとう!
