Description

Great Western Railway (later British Railways) No. 5322 is one of two surviving 4300-class 2-6-0 (Mogul) locomotives. It was built in 1917 and commissioned as a military locomotive in World War I, serving with the Railway Operating Division (ROD) in a khaki livery. After the Armistice, No. 5322 was "demobilized" and put on the GWR, where it wore the regular green livery. It served as an excellent light mixed-traffic engine until 1964, when it was retired and sent to Woodham Brothers Scrapyard, Barry, Wales.

The Great Western Society bought it in 1969, making it the first of many GWR engines to be saved from Barry and restored. No. 5322 is now enjoying a comfortable retirement at Didcot Railway Centre, and is currently painted in BR black with both GWR and BR number plates. It also appeared as a (theoretically) Russian locomotive alongside Keira Knightley and Jude Law in the recent movie Anna Karenina, based on the book by Leo Tolstoy.
