Description

Few railways and locomotive designs are as closely connected as the Great Western Railway (GWR) and the 0-6-0 pannier tank engine.  First seen in the 1860s, various types of panniers were built over the years, with the most common and famous being the 57xx class.  863 of this Charles Collett design were built from 1929 to 1950, making them the most common British tank engine and the most common British steam locomotive overall after the LNWR DX goods engine.  While the Kings and Castles pulled the big express trains, it was the 57xx panniers that did practically everything on the GWR.  With 16 survivors, this is one of the best-preserved GWR classes, and most survivors are still operational.  No. 3650 is maintained at Didcot Railway Centre in GWR green with the "shirt button" logo on the tanks.  Behind it is No. 6998 Burton Agnes Hall, another useful engine.
