GJR-LNWR 2-2-2 Columbine

Description

In 1845, the Grand Junction Railway (GJR) locomotive works at Crewe built Columbine, a 2-2-2 designed by Francis Trevithick and Alexander Allan.  As GJR 49, Columbine pulled express passenger trains from Birmingham to Liverpool and Manchester.  When the GJR joined the London and North Western Railway (LNWR), Columbine was renumbered 1868, and continued working until its retirement 1902.

The "Crewe type" locomotive with outside cylinders and a double frame was widely exported and copied throughout Europe from the 1840s to the 1860s.  There may still be a few in France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, or other countries.  Columbine is now on display at the London Science Museum, albeit as LNWR 1868 rather than GJR 49, and its tender and cab are stored somewhere else.

Thanks! I had trouble identifying this loco when I saw it in person, and I was going to upload one of my photos for identification help.
