GCR Atlantic 8B-194

Description

The Great Central Railway (GCR) Class 8B was a 4-4-2 (Atlantic) introduced in 1903. John G. Robinson based it on his earlier Class 8 4-6-0 mixed-traffic engine, but adapted it for dedicated express-passenger service. 27 units were built by Gorton, and they were quickly assigned to the heavy London Marylebone-Manchester expresses. The 8B Atlantic class was nicknamed "Jersey Lily" after a music-hall star of the time. When the GCR was absorbed into the LNER, the Jersey Lilies were painted black, and lasted until 1950. This model at NRM York represents No. 194 in its original GCR livery.
