Description
Great Central Railway (GCR) 4-4-0 express-passenger steam locomotive No. 438 Worsley-Taylor was built in December 1913 as the last of John Robinson's 11E-class "Directors." It was followed on the Gorton Works production line by No. 506 Butler-Henderson, the first 11F "Improved Director." After the 1923 Grouping placed the GCR under the new London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), Worsley-Taylor became LNER Robinson D10-class engine No. 5438. It was retired by British Railways in 1954 as No. 62659 and scrapped, leaving Butler-Henderson as the only survivor of either class of "Directors," though this small scale model of Worsley-Taylor is on display at the National Railway Museum in York, England.
