Description

Here's a car you wouldn't usually find in Japan.  I spotted this black 1970s Chevrolet Camaro parked across the street from the school in Fuji City.  It looks like it was imported straight from America, as it is equipped with left-hand drive.

This car model was never officially built as a RHD nor exported anywhere. The best alternatives were custom shops and 3rd party dealerships customizing and shipping them elsewhere and even that was decades later and quite rare.

Matter of fact there is not a single Camaro ever factory built intended for RHD, however some brochures do mention them but there was never any appeal for them in big numbers to justify mass production and official exports of the same. After all American cars were unrealible oversized gas guzzlers that next to no one wanted in the world. And the closest ones who wanted one made some alternatives locally anyway.

Also another closest alternative some people liked to do was body kits documented in UK and Australia, again made by custom unofficial shops. Probably to be edgy and 'troll' others thinking it's a foreign car while the main frame shell and insides were a local Ford or whatever else they locally produced ...

My bet is this was shipped to Australia then eventually ended up in Japan, for whatever reason ...

Seen lots of cars being imported and either used as a display or abandoned completely due to regulations.

Once again Australia is known for car customizations and botching different cars together for sh-ts and giggles or pure need of a running vehicle. Hence why even Mad Max franchise was heavily inspired by the same mentality.
