Front View of Yoshitsune

From the front, Horonai Railway 2-6-0 steam locomotive No. 1 Yoshitsune (義經) resembles a typical American locomotive of the late 19th century with its tall smokestack, large single headlight, and pointy cowcatcher, though when it was built in 1880 it was sent not to the Wild West but to Hokkaido.  The manufacturer's name -- H.K. Porter and Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- is inscribed around the number on the smokebox door.  It is preserved in excellent condition at the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, now part of the new Kyoto Railway Museum.
