French-Built Komet

During World War II, Nazi Germany used slave labor to build weapons and military equipment.  This Messerschmitt Me 163B Komet, a rocket-powered interceptor, was built in occupied France.  It was sabotaged during construction, with a small stone near the fuel tank ready to cause a fuel leak, as well as contaminated glue that could cause the wings to disintegrate in flight.  One of the workers scrawled "Mon coeur est en chomage" (literally "My heart is unemployed") inside the plane. 

The Luftwaffe never found out that this plane had been sabotaged, as it did not enter service.  Had it done so, it would have flown with JG 400, the Komet squadron that shot down 9 enemies but lost 14 of its own planes.  After being restored in Canada, the Komet is on display in the WWII gallery of the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio).
