Description

Ffestiniog Railway carriage No. 39 was an open-sided "toastrack" built by Robert Hudson Ltd. (Leeds, England) in 1923 during light railway king Colonel Holman F. Stephens' leadership of the FR.  No. 39 ran on both the FR and the Welsh Highland Railway (WHR) before it was converted to a flatcar.  A replica of this carriage was built by Winson Engineering of Penrhyndeudraeth in 1992 with parts from goods wagon No. 73, and in 2003 was repainted in the "Colonel Stephens" livery (green with red ends) I saw it wearing at Porthmadog Harbour Station.  Though the original No. 39 was rated to carry 32 passengers, this replica is only rated for 24, as the average passenger has gotten larger over the past century or so.
