Description

The Caledonian Railway Dunalastair-series 4-4-0s were designed by John F. McIntosh in 1896, and redesigned every few years, eventually reaching four classes of passenger locomotives.  The Dunalastair III class was built by Glasgow St Rollox Works from 1899 to 1900, and could produce 18,411 pounds of tractive effort thanks to its large boiler.  A model of Dunalastair III No. 902 is on display at the National Railway Museum (NRM York).  The design was copied by the Belgian State Railways (NMBS/SNCB) as both a 4-4-0 tender engine and 4-4-2 (Atlantic) tank engine; one of each survives in Belgium, but none of the Caledonian Dunalastairs survive in Britain.
