Boeing WB-50D Weather Superfortress

The B-50 was an extensively modified Boeing B-29 Superfortress.  Ordered by the U.S. Air Force as a bomber, it was repurposed in the early 1950s due to the introduction of much faster jet bombers.  Those equipped with extensive sensor arrays for weather recon duty were designated WB-50D.  Some of them flew over the Soviet Union, where their sensors picked up radioactive particles and xenon gas, confirming increased Soviet nuclear activity.  The last WB-50D was retired in 1965 and put on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio).
