Baltimore and Ohio 0-8-0 Memnon

Description

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad began using 0-8-0 locomotives in the mid-1840s, including some built by Newcastle Manufacturing Company, New Castle, Delaware.  One of them, L-57 Memnon of 1848, is on display at the B&O Railroad Museum.  It looks much like it did during the Civil War, when the Union Army used it to pull heavy military trains, and is the only surviving Newcastle locomotive.  After the war, the 2-8-0 (Consolidation) took over as the standard heavy-freight locomotive in America, and the 0-8-0 was demoted to shunting duties.  As seen on Memnon, the 0-8-0 is not terribly agile, and cannot take curves at high speeds.
